ok dont know what the problem might be?

the bike just turned 76000 miles. ran a tank of gas threw it. ran fine refilled the bike. now for some darn reason the bike cant get past 65 mph? it seems like it just loses power. no smoke still good compression across all cylnders. reminds me of a yugo trying to pass a semi LOL. also i noticed a little poping noise at idle? maybe time for a tune up or a tear down and rebuild? these are mostly highway miles on this bike. and i dont think 76000 is bad on my bike consdering its age. any other ideas why this bike is doing this? i can zip it up through alll the gears with plenty of power just when i hit top gear and cruise and then hit the gas its like kicking a dead horse and it shakes sometimes but that might be my air ride suppension?

  1. Fuel Starvation? Does it have an inline fuel filter? That bike shouldn't be hurt at 76K miles, the problem is almost certainly Fuel or Electrical.

  2. It Could be as simple as needing a new set of plugs to something in the gas you filled up with. Has the bike been sitting for any period of time? If so some rust could have lodged in the carbs.

When I read "Ican zip up through all the gears with plenty of power just when I hit top gear and cruise and then hit the gas it's like kicking a dead horse" That kind of sounds like you are lugging it as if you were not going fast enough for top gear when you flogged it. But when you describe the shaking it sounds as though it is misfiring and that could be the plugs or something to do with the ignition. So that's my guess..PLUGS. Try the plugs first then put some dry gas in the tank. If it still doesn't clear up check your spark when the engine is cold then check it again after you've been riding it for a half hour.

Whatever it is I'm sure it is minor. Look at the simple things first. Gas, Plugs, Dirty Air filter (check and clean the air filters)

Dirt in the carbs. Good Luck

  3. I am having a simular problem, but what I think it is from is the heat on our highways.  I think the tank is building a vacuum and not letting the tank vent.  I stopped the other day by the road and opened the tank, did not vent but it ran perfect after that.  I think there is a 1 way valve on the fuel line and it may giving me problems just havent had time to check it yet.  Had nail in rear tiere and had to have it plugged so I was taking the wheel off and reinstalling all weekend.

  4. You got a bad tank of gas.

Buy a little bottle of "carb cleaner gas additive."  Several companies make them.  Be sure to get the stuff that you add to gasoline.  Pour about a third of the bottle into your full gas tank.

Oh yeah, you fouled your plugs, so you need to clean them.  One at a time, so you don't mix up the wires.  While you have them out, make sure the gap is correct, and the same for all the plugs.

Also check the oil level.  Having too much causes my motorcycle to run badly;  might be the same with yours.
