1985 OMC Outdrive won't go into reverse?

I just bought a marlin boat with a 1985 omc outdrive in it.The first five or six times i used it,it when into reverse no problem,then the next morning i started and put it in reverse and it just started grinding like it was trying to catch but doesn't.Any help would be great,Its in a marina also, is there anything simple i can check without pulling it out of the water.thanks alot

  1. The shift cable is bad! You have to pull the boat to do that! Sorry!
