1986 Evinrude 90hp stator/regulator question?

hi all,

what is the best technique for identifying problems with your stator and voltage regulator. I'm currently not getting any current flow through the power leads when the engine is operating, no voltage change is recorded either. Would a faulty regulator completely stop output from the stator or would it only result in unregulated output? how many amps should be produced from the stator? what typically fails on the stator? is it common for these units to fail? I would understand the regulator failing however I would think the stator should be reliable...? is there a test I can perform on the feed to the regulator to identify if the stator is operational? any help appreciated, thanks

  1. yes, use a volt meter. check that your charge coil from the stater going to regulator is producing around 13 to 14 volts when cranking or running.

If you don't have 13   to 14 volts comming out from  charge coil,  then coil is bad. If you do,..regulator rectifier is bad.

It is more common for the rectifier to fail then the coil. Also check fuse in red lead at rectifier.

  2. from what you have said, i woudl say your regulator is the problem, the stator is giving you spark so it is fine, check the output of the regulator shoud be about 12 or 13 volts, if youahve a Dc amp meter, i believe that model puts out 9 amps.
