1986 Yamaha Maxim Oil Specs.?

I own a 1986 Yamaha Maxim Motorcycle that has been sitting in my gararge for 7 years or so, and of course I lost the owners manual. Im trying to fix it up but I don't know what type of oil it takes. I can't find a tag or anything on it that tells what type of oil it takes. Some one told me they thought the engine size was 250cc, but I though I rembered it being a 700cc engine. So does anyone know how much and what type of oil it would take. My guess would be that it would take 10W-40 oil. But im not 100% sure though.

Thanks!

  1. I had the same bike years ago and I used Castrol 20w50 in the hot season.  there is a small glass window on the right hand lower engine case above the rear brake pedal that when you put the bike on the center stand you can add oil to the engine until its about half way up in the window, that is where the level needs to be, I think it was about 1 1/2 quarts.  the 20w50 may seem think but it got me over 50,000 miles with out ANY repairs to the engine.

  2. I have a XJ750 Maxum 1982 and I use 20-50. My bike holds 3 qts. no dip stick a site glass on the right side lower case.

If you go to a Yamaha cycle shop they will be able to help you.
