1987 Ford mustang... good car for a kid?

It is in phenominal shape for its age and mileage... 83,000 miles. It has the 302 cc V8 engine which is supposed to be able to tolerate anything and last a very long time. I spoke with a mechanic who is selling it for someone else and he said everything big (clutch, transmission, struts, etc) are in good shape. It's a GT in a convertible version which is pretty rare. (He told me the price of these cars is going up and I may even resell for a good price). It is white.

The only negative side is that the white leather interior is in kind of rough shape. I would want to eventually fix this. (cost?) Also gas mileage could be a negative at around 16 city, 22 hwy, but I think it's worth it for such an awesome car. What kind of gas would i want to put in it? The asking price is $5500. I am a safe driver, looking for something that is powerful and a standard and this seems like a good car. I will not use it during the winter. It will be registered under my dads name to hopefully offset the insurance prices. What do you think, should I buy it? Is a 1990 mustang convertible worth the same price?

  1. Nope.

It's a 21 year old car that will suffer from 21 year old car issues.

A Mustang GT vert is not rare.  Even in a Fox body.

As for future resale prices, without a crystal ball, nobody really knows how that turns out.  The market is only as good as the buyer's offered price.

You are getting suckered in by a good sales person.  Really, he doesn't want you to buy the car and give him $5500 for a car that is not worth $5500?  Please.

  2. 83,000 miles? Maybe 283,000 haha. Seriously, why is the interior so bad  if it is so low mile. And a car that is over 20 years old. Think about that...

    I say no.

  3. i owned a 1982 mustang gt and a 1986 mustang gt with t-tops. i now own a 2006 mustang gt hardtop. the mileage seems low for an interior so trashed, i bought my '86 with 75,000 miles and the interior was near perfect. for a car that old it prob. has 186,000 or more, as the odometer does not register past 99,999 miles I believe. My 1996 dodge caravan has close to 200,000 miles on it already. For $5,500.00 you could find a MUCH nicer and newer car that would not need as near as much work and would get much better gas mileage. I say no go.

1987? I will line up my '06 GT no problem. The '87 has only 225hp. Its your choice, you sound like my son who is also a teenager, you are gonna do what you want so good luck. And as far as that guy "doesn't really want to sell" line, thats the oldest trick in the book...I have bought tons of cars in my life and have heard them all.

  4. The answer may vary by person. It would be a good idea to hear some of them and try to choose the best one. Here is a good one.http://car-insurance.bestips.info/car-in...

  5. Get it dude!! That is awesome.....for 5500 that s not bad

  6. 88-93 are the best look for a gt with the ground kit i think 91 game with 16" wheels two tone are nice like a twilight blue w/silver bottom.

88-93 have the plastic head lights not the glass, plastic  makes it look so much better
