Our family has an '87 Merc-Benz 420 SEL with 70,000 miles and notice minute amounts of fluid leaking from what appears to be the rear main seal (e.g. teaspoon in 6 months).

How much time is for labor and what would be an estimate cost for parts.

  1. Ouch.

Trust me, two teaspoons of oil per YEAR is no big deal. Just drive it and if it gets worse take out a second mortgage on your home and get it fixed.

  2. you have to pull the engine or the transmission to replace it ands its lot easier to pull the transmission, labor and parts on doing this usually runs around 4-500 bucks depending on who does it, i have seen it go as high as 700 from some shops,it takes a while to do this and do it right, good luck.
