It will shift to reverse if you kill the engine first. Any suggestions?

  1. there is an shift interrupter switch.this switch interrupts the ignition, shutting the engine down for just a split second to allow shifting.either the cable needs adjustment or as another said ,complete replacement of the intermediate shift cable.adjustment is fairly simple, but the cable replacement should be done by a trained tec.

  2. If it is a MERCRUISER package you'll need a new "intermediate shift cable" for openers.

  3. the engine has an interrupter switch which causes which is best described as a miss in the engine it cuts the the engine off so briefly that you probably won't even notice it.it gives a little slack to the drivetrain to let it shift.if you drive a car with a stick try to put the car into neutral while stepping on  the gas than try with your foot off the gas

  4. Hay , though you neglect to state what type of drive you have. if it is a in-board-out board it sounds as if the Ignition disruptor needs a adjustment. if it is an outboard you may have a stuck or bent shift arm;)  ether way don't try to go out with your problem. lots of luck

  5. The shift cable is streched

You have too much play in the cable
