Ok i just bought a 1990 Toyota Supra Turbo

about a week ago and its super amazing, i couldnt

ask for a better car.

But i was reading that the headgaskets go out really easy....

When it does what exactly happens? How much is a new one?

And how much would it cost to have them install it?

Also what are some minor upgrades/parts you guys suggest in

the performance criteara? Like what should i buy first?

  1. Why not just enjoy the car. The go fast parts will yield only minimal gains.  Nips put a lot of bang in that engine right out of the box.  With routine maintenance, it'll run 250K + .

  2. The head gasket is between the head and block. When it goes bad, coolant seeps into the cylinders. That's bad not only because it fouls the combustion, but the loss of coolant could over heat the engine and cause major damage. to the head and engine. And it could warp the head which could mean having it machined flat again or replaced. Head gaskets are a cheap part but expensive to replace.

If your worried about blowing a head gasket, I wouldn't recommend any performance mods.

  3. cold air intake, exhaust, headers

  4. I haven't seen many head-gaskets go out unless someone has boosted the turbo by messing with the waste-gate.  When it goes out it will start overheating and in bad cases, steaming out of tailpipe. If you are going to boost the turbo I would go with upgraded metal performance head-gaskets.   To start out go to a Toyota dealer that sells TRD (Toyota Racing Development) parts and check out what bolt-on accessories are made specifically for the Supra.  The offer many options like cold air intake, low restriction air filters and cat-back exhaust.  These products will fit and perform much better than aftermarket.

  5. head gaskets dont usually go out they get blown out by overrevving the engine and overheating it, when this happens the motor has to be tore apart and the head have to be pressure tested to make sure they didnt crack, when it happens the car will start to run like complete ****, if the cylinder fills with coolant it could lock the motor up, you'll get water in your engine oil, alot of bad things basically, and the repairs can cost anywhere from 1500-3000 dollars if not more, its alot of work
