Question:

1990 bayliner 120hp i/o l drive { Help}?

I have a 1990 bayliner and am having trouble adjusting the throttle cables it don't want to adjust to neutral if it goes into neutral then it won't go into reverse any advice i don't mind taking to the shop but he's booked for the next 3-4 weeks so any help would be great

You are having problems because your intermediate shift cable from your drive is out of adjustment.To set it properly you need to remove your out-drive.I cannot remember what the measurement is but if you have a manual it will have it there.This is a common problem with O M C when the cable gets worn and stretched or someone installs a new one and does not set it before installing the out-drive.I hope this helps and I'm sorry I cannot remember the measurement.Good luck.

In 1990 Bayliner was still using OMC Cobra stern drives, but they also used the Force I/O on some models.   If you have the OMC your problem is probably the lower unit shift cable.  These can fail, and it's difficult to see, because of location.  It's a job for the mechanic.  If it's the force, disconnect both throttle and gear shift.  Then set the shift in neutral, and adjust the end of the cable to match.  then reconnect the throttle.

  3. its the shift cable that needs adjusting  locate that and play with ittill you get it right or ask the shop where its located  they should tell you
