  1. You'll be sorry. When the transmission goes, or the rack and pinion, or the brakes, or the air conditioner. Cars that were expensive when new are even more expensive when they get old.

  2. It's still a hard question to answer.  How's the body?  Rust?  How's it drive?  Brakes good?  Leak any fluids?  Interior?  How about all of the electronics?  These cars were extremely cool back in the day, but unless they've had an owner to keep everything working, they are a nightmare.  Parts are not cheap for a Bimmer and they never will be.  It all comes down to how well it's been taken care of.

I've got a late 80's 7 that I bought cheap and have done all the work on myself, but I'm nowhere near being finished...and it's not cheap.  I paid a lot less than you and will probably put 3-4k (parts and paint)  into mine before I'm done.  Mine had a new fan, radiator, belts, etc. as well... and a lot more new parts than the one you're looking at.  Mine doesn't make any sense financially... but it's a hobby.

If you do buy this plan on attempting to do a lot of work yourself or paying a lot for shop labor.

They're fun and addicting... but they usually don't make much sense if you're looking for a 'deal'.

  3. Absolutely not no 535i of that vintage is worth not a penny over 1500 smackers and it better be in excellent condition.. Let the seller find another sucker..

That year 535i is totally undependable.  You have to go back to 1988 and under to get a reliable 5 series..
