1990 harley softail - the start went on it -unbolted all the bolts but it won't come out of the flywheel??

I have a 1990 Harley Softail. The starter went on it. Got a new starter - I undone all the bolts but it won't come out. Its stick on the flywheel. How can I get it out . So I can get back to ridding??

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable, remove primary cover, bend tab on lockplate away from head of jackshaft bolt, hold pinion gear in place and remove jackshaft bolt, lockplate and thrust washer.  Remove oil tank.  Remove s***w and end cover from starter, remove both mounting bolts and washers and engine ground cable.  Remove protective boot, remove nut with washer (metric), remove positive battery cable ring terminal, remove circuit breaker wire ring terminal, detach solenoid wire.

    Then remove starter.


  2. What cycleshop said. The days of disconnecting the battery and unbolting two bolts are over(three if you count the one on the starter)

  3. You should take it to a dealer and have them do the work.  Harley mechanics go through rigourous training and certification all for the priviledge of being able to work on the most respected and technologically advanced bike in the world.  You are simply not qualified to do the work.
