  1. the XR250 is a pretty bullet proof old design bike that is pretty easy to work on.  I have owned a total of about 10 or so of the bigger bore brother to yours (500/600/650) dating back to the early 1980s.  great design, just heavy...

10w30 will work in colder temperatures, living where I do in TX, I usually run 15w40 or 20w50 due to the much hotter temperatures and I also ran these alot under race conditions of enduro/HS/etc.

I am not sure of any place to download a manual but I have had an assortment of clymer & haynes that sure help with troubleshooting and repairs with simple step by step photo instructions... would probably have to buy though.

as for the head light.  it's a pretty simple hook up and you should be able to trace the wire harness and check for broken wires or where the insulation might be damaged and grounding out somewhere along the way.  I would probably start off with starting the engine and using a test light to see if power is getting up to the socket where the bulb plugs in and then trace backwards until you do find power ... at least this will give you a good starting point.  it might be the regulator (mounted kinda up under the gas tank.

http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcy... look here and go down to the diagram showing the "wiring harness" for a pictorial ...

as for starting.  every one of the big XRs I owned had a system to start that was unique to a few year range when the designs were very similar.  like on a cold engine, choke on, compression release open, kick the bike thru 10 times, close compression release, find top of compression stroke with the kick starter (where it gets really hard to press down)... bring lever to the top and kick quickly and hard... should fire right up.... like I said, each has it's own technique (might be 7 kicks or 13 kicks with compression release open)...

good luck and hope that helps!
