My wife and I are looking at this 1992 24' Sea Ray 240 Overnighter. The price is to where I can buy it outright without any financing. I am not an avid boater, probably because I dont own one :) I am somewhat familiar with them to know the basics, and this style is what we are looking for.

My question(s) are:

Has anyone had experience with a boat of this size and style and manufacturer (doesn't have to be 92), and what did you think of the quality and ride?

When buying a boat of this age, what are some things that I should keep an eye out for?

Thanks alot

  1. think about the dry weight for towing - if you want to spend the money, have a compression check done - a single engine is better than twin on gas and repairs - ask about prior maintenance -  *** impeller should be changed immediately - if they fail, the engine overheats and blows!!

we have a 1988 and it runs like a champ - good luck

  2. have owned four searays including 22, 24 26 and present 29ft. all top quality.. the main thing to have checked by a professional surveyor is the engine. it will be the highest probability of problems especially if used in saltwater. i assume you have an i/o drive. if so have it checked for corrision wear. not enough space for all things but you may want to check two websites. Mercruiser.com and Marine engines.com for discussion bt users and pros. good luck and happy boating.

  3. A boat that large and expensive is worth getting a surveyor for.. With any boat that large you will be tempted to go out on further exploits. Brush up on navigation skills. Particularly dead reckoning. It ain't called dead reckoning for nothing. ;)

The most calls the Coast Guard gets are from folks who's LORAN or GPS has acted up while they had charts and compass in good order and couldn't use them. Towing is expensive and folks tell me that the most empty feeling in the world is seeing the Coast Guard leave after the place a call for your tow.

I'm a rag sailor myself and don't know much about the Sea Ray as a manufacturer. I do see a few arround here in Delaware.

If you can afford the Gas and the boat checks out you should have years of fun.
