Let me just start with saying i am not 18, i am old enough to remember 1992 and the games. That said I would have to go with this team only because of the way the players have devolped over the last few years. They are so much more athletic and trained and toned. Also any team in todays era with Kobe, Kidd, LJ, Howard, Paul, Wade, Boozer all at this stage of their careers is unstopable. They are all in their prime and Kobe has devoloped into a great shooter, defender, loves the pressure and has become a better team player, LJ is simply amazing gettting to the hoop and Howard isnt called Super man for nothing, Redd is one of the best pure shooter i have ever seen. Booozer has become a monster on the boards and down low, Princes D is un parrelled today. They are all at the right points in their careers for the challenge..

Magic and Bird are still 2 of my favorite players of all time but by the time the 1992 team played they were kinda getting older, this team today is young and hungery

  1. Did you forget about who MJ and Magic are? It would be a dog fight, but I would have to go with Dream Team.

    P.S. Charles and Drexler too!!

  2. The 1992 team would kill the 2008 team, thats like comparing USA to Canada.

  3. The fact that you are comparing the 1992 team with this year's team tells me that you are probably _much_ younger than 18.

  4. You cant compare any team to that 1992 dream team...The starting line up included Bird,Magic and Jordan arguably the greatest 3 players of ALL-TIME...the whole team was deep at every position...they did more than just win, they embarrassed the competition, teams were SCAIRED to face them

  5. no it should be Kidd Kobe lebron ( but not playing so) melo Howard boozer

  6. There is a reason why they are called the Dream Team

  7. The 92 Dream team was a group great team players. Jordan, Stockton, Magic, Bird, Drexler, Robinson, Ewing... all team players.  08 squad has a bunch of players who are used to taking the majority of a teams shot, Ball hog kobe(i don't care of his "Improved" team skills), Dwayne Wade, Carmelo.  The Dream team also had defensive players like Robinson and Ewing.  Bosh, Howard and boozer are not of that caliber of defensive players. Sure Howard can block shots, but he looks for offense first rather than D. The guards all lack D except for Kobe and Deron Williams.  The point we should take from Athens is that scoring is not going to make you win (why do think they didn't invite Iverson back).  A cohesive team game will.  The 08 team will win gold but it will be tough.

  8. Please don't ever compare the 92 USA Team. Cmon it's speak for it self "Dream Team"

  9. 1992 Dream team, no contest.

  10. I heard an a sports radio host bring this argument up over the weekend. For those of you who live in Los Angeles, it was Joe Grande on 570AM. He also thought that the 2008 team would beat the 1992 dream team. I'm hoping that the both of you are not being serious.

First off, this USA may not even win the gold in this olympics. Don't get me wrong, I'm hoping that they do but I think that it will be very difficult. Here is the recipe for disaster on this team: D Howard gets in foul trouble and they have an off shooting night from the outside. Those two things happen and they have a good chance of losing.

The players on the 2008 team are not seasoned. Every player on that 92 team was well seasoned. They all knew how to play the game. What Bird and Magic were losing in athleticism they easily made up for in intelligence. You can't remember the 92 team throwing ridiculous alley oops that ended up in turnovers as you will likely see from time to time with this team.

If it came down to a game between the two teams, I believe that 92 wins pretty easily. The game would not be a run and gun affair as many people might thinks. The 92 team would destroy this team inside. This years team has Melo playing the 4. Are you telling me Charles Barkley, Karl Malone and David Robinson/Ewing (if they decided to go big) would not dominate the inside.

The only ray of hope I see from the 2008 team is from the point guard position. Chris Paul is amazing and may end up being one of the best point guards ever.

But, in the end, Dream Team I wins pretty easily.

  11. both! i believe either team would be able to slaughter the competition the problem isn't that the competition have become better than U.S players(even though global talent really has increased over the past years). The problem is that players have slacked off over the years and didn't put much interest in the gold medal. Most focused on the championship over a gold medal in the olympics.

But the situation has drastically changed in recent years, new younger talent has emerged for the U.S. And veterans want to make up for past poor prefomances to retake the gold this year.

  12. There better then ppl think because the international talent is much better then it was then.

However the names kobe carmelo lebron dwayne and dwight come no where close to jordan bird magic clyde drexler and others

  13. Don't think too much of the 55 point blowout (120-65).  That Canadian team (FIBA Ranking #17, which is not going to the Olympics) also didn't have its top players.  Dalembert (who was on the roster) didn't play...Steve Nash wasn't even on the team...nor fellow NBA-er Jamaal Magloire.  If those 3 played in this game and it still had the same outcome I would then make a big deal out of it.

The 1992 team cruised through all opponents:

    USA 116  Angola 48

    USA 103  Croatia 70

    USA 111  Germany 68

    USA 127  Brazil 83

    USA 122  Spain 81

    USA 115  Puerto Rico 77

    USA 127  Lithuania 76

    USA 117  Croatia 85

    Average margin of victory: 43.875

Keep in mind that most of the 2008 team have been together for 3 years practicing and perfecting the FIBA game.  The 1992 didn't even have a year together...they may have had a few months!

I remember watching the 1992 team...It looked like they didn't even try!  Could you imagine if Jordan, Magic, and Bird tried?????

Here is the 1992 teams stats from the 1991-1992 NBA Season: (Per Game)

Magic Johnson-First year out of the league

    Year before-Pts: 19.4  Ast: 12.5  Reb: 7  Ast: 1.29

    Chris Paul-Pts: 21.1  Ast: 11.6  Reb: 4  Stl: 2.7

    Chris Bosh-Pts: 22.3  Ast. 2.6  Reb: 8.7  Blk: 1.0

    Deron Williams-Pts: 18.8  Ast: 10.5  Reb: 3  Stl: 1.1

    Carlos Boozer-Pts: 21.1  Ast: 2.9  Reb: 10.4  Stl: 1.2  Blk: 0.5

    Tyshaun Prince-Pts: 13.2  Ast: 3.3  Reb: 4.9 Stl: 0.5  Blk: 0.4

    Michael Redd-Pts: 22.7  Ast: 3.4  Reb: 4.3  Stl: 0.9

1992 team out scores the 2008 team ( you can even take a few points per game away from Magic & Laettner and they still out score them).

Either way...I hope Team USA wins gold!!!!!

Bring it home for "Old Glory"

  14. No way..... not ever......

    Roster for '92:

        Charles Barkley

        Larry Bird

        Clyde Drexler

        Patrick Ewing

        Earvin "Magic" Johnson

        Michael Jordan

        Christian Laettner

        Karl Malone

        Chris Mullin

        Scottie Pippen

        David Robinson

        John Stockton

        Coach: Chuck Daly

The Dream Team won the Olympic basketball tournament with an average margin of victory of 43.8 points and without coach Chuck Daly ever using a timeout (IN THE WHOLE TOURNAMENT)

Also, of the 12 players on the team, 10 were named in 1996 among the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History

Now tell me, do you really think the 2008 team could accomplish that???

    I don't think so.

They weren't called the "Dream Team" for nothing.
