  1. Synchronize the carbs.

Uneven impulses cause the clutch basket to rattle around.

When the engine is reved, the clutch basket is moving so fast, it doesn't have a chance to rattle.

As bikes age, the clutch basket and dampeners ware out.

When you pull in the clutch, the clutch discs separate and put a drag between the inner & outer clutch baskets.

Next recourse would be to inspect the clutch baskets and replace if necessary.

  2. apart from all they have already said, if it's loose bolts then get ready for a bang happening on your right hand side.

    Lol.

I had that on an RD350 lol. I even made it home by locking the clutch through the gaping hole in the carter.

But I bet it's a loose clutch basket

  3. Here's my answer.

If its a low knock could be detonation, caused by low octane gas. Basically hot spots build up in you cylinder and ignite the mixture after the spark but before the spark ignites the intire mixture. Try running higher octane gas if possible since octane is just a measure of the gas's resistance to detonation.

If its more of a ping or rattle could be piston slap, especially if it goes away at higher RPM's. Basically the clearance between your pistons and the cylinder walls has become excessive and the pistons are rattling around.

A tick is likely valves and a rattling sound is likely cam chain tensioner.

Without being able to hear it is is kind of difficult to be able to troubleshoot so there's kind of a crash course in engine sound diagnosis on motorcycles.

  4. like dragon said the basket is loose.it happend on my 1980.but i completley rebuilt my engine trans combo. either tighten the basket up (it could be loose bolts) or get a new one and replace it.being a 1000 you may want to replace the basket and the clutch.

  5. the clutch basket is worn. it's an old bike so this is common. it will cost about 400 bucks to fix so if it is worth it to you then get it repaired. if not then it's just a noise. mine was like that for 3 years with no problems before i sold it and now my 84 FJ1100 is doing the same.
