Question:

1993 Dodge Dakota idling problem

I own a 1993 Dodge Dakota Sport V6 engine with about 150,000 miles on it. So anyway yesterday my check engine light came on after I got off a very bumpy road and then when I put the truck into park it idles up to 1 RPM then stalls. So I decided to change my spark plugs and cables since they were very bad. Changing the spark plugs did not fix the problem so I then checked all my vacuum hoses and came across the EGR valve which I noticed the little piston inside was not moving like it should be.

So I just got finished replacing the EGR Valve and when I started my truck it made a little improvement, but my engine still sounds weak and the check engine light is still on. Also there is a gasping hissing noise coming from the carburetor as the truck idles. I checked all the vacuum hoses and could not find a leak. I did notice that my brake pedal got really hard and it used to be soft when pressing down on it.

What could be the problem?

  1. brake booster  vacuum leak.. chase it down by spraying something like wd40 around all hoses and starter by the master

  2. the diaphragm may be busted for the brake booster on it this will give you an enormous leak ,that may be the hissing sound your hearing on it,try plugging the line off for the brake booster and see if that helps with the running part of it,it may be the leak your hearing on it,also try spraying carburetor cleaner around the base of the throttle body and around the intake gasket, just to see if the engine speeds up any if it does you may have a blown intake or throttle body gasket on it,good luck
