1993 MBZ 300SL upholstery question..?

I need to get the driver's side seat re-upholstered and one shop said it is better to replace the back and seat cushions with already upholstered pads (I assume he refers to after-market).

He recommended doing both seats for $1800.00

2nd shop said he could re-upholster the seat for $1600.00 per seat.

Are the pre-made pads good quality or the cheap substititue?

My car is in excellent condition.

  1. Try germanstar,or adistco. Both have the right leather. And its really not hard to do yourself.

  2. The factory seat pads are without equal. You should ask to see the work done by the less expensive guy. Just for laughs, you should call a Mercedes Dealer parts dept and ask what a complete set of pads, springs, and skins would cost for original equipment. You may be surprised.

  3. If you want a quality result use Mercedes parts and do both seats at the same time. If you only do one the color of the seats might not match, since the passenger seat covers have been exposed to the sun for 15 years. It's hard to say, but the higher estimate could be using O.E. material. You should contact the dealer to see what the seatcovers will cost, and talk to several shops before you get the work done, including getting an estimate at a dealership. If you have the dealer do the work for you you'll get a warranty that is good at every dealership in the country, and if additional parts are needed to complete the job they'll be able to get them quickly.
