After a blown head gasket, I start noticing a very hard to hear rod knock only when I manually accelerate under hood with ear to motor. I ws trying to diagnose a really bad skipping problem, could this be the cause? all plugs etc. are firing, and I replaced the head gasket, and all others needed.

  1. Probably not.

    Check compression.

    Change the plug wires.

  2. my first question would be how much coolant got into the engine? i agree that generally, a rod (be it connecting or push) should not cause the skipping (misfire) but it would definately cause the noise. did you have the cylinder head checked to make sure it wasn't cracked or warped? did you do one head or both? if everything else is okay, you might have a fuel injector not pulsing. but, at this point, it may be time to make a trip to you friendly neighborhood mechanic.
