1994 Gibson Houseboat question?

I own a 41-foot Gibson houseboat with twin 454 gasoline Merc engines. The engines do not have thermostats in them, causing them to reamin cool to the touch even when cruising for long periods. The temp. gauges also remain at low temps. because of this.

Is it better to have thermostats installed, or to just leave it as is?

I've had the boat for 3 years and have never had any problems with the engines at all. They are regularly maintained and the mechanic said there is no need for thermostats.

  1. How low is low? What you're describing could be too low, or it could be ok. There is an ideal temperature range for the operation of those engines, but I don't have my manual handy to looki it up for you. Why don't you just call a dealer, boat shop, or marine mechanic?
