Im looking for my first car so i put an add in the paper. I soon got a couple calls. One of them being a ford mustang V6 for $1850. I asked the man how many miles it had on it and he said that it had 170000 miles on the body, but only 65000 on the engine that was rebuilt. Only problem is, he doesnt have proof that the engine was rebuilt but he sounds like a good guy thats not going to lie. Should i trust him and buy it? Is there any way you can tell if the engine has been rebuilt? How good are these cars anyway.. is it worth it? And last but not least, Hows the gas mileage on these v6s? thanks

  1. Rebuilding an engine is a pricey enough process that it's hard believe that no documentation exists of it. And keep in mind that, even if the engine has been rebuilt, every other mechanical component on the car has 170,000 miles, and may require replacement in the not-too-distant future.

  2. if he cant show it was rebuilt i wouldnt trust that it was...

you will use more gas than you want to

i had a 95 mustang and enjoyed it

  3. You would have to cross reference the engine block numbers with those on the car. If they DON'T match, then you've got a rebuild. If they DO, then he's lying  unless he's saying he rebuilt the original engine. That engine should get upwards of 25 mpg. I have a 1997 mustang cobra, and it gets 24mpg on the hwy. That's a 305 + HP V-8

So the six banger has got to do better. I would say it's worth it if the rest of the car is in good shape.

  4. It's a little hard to tell if he's being truthful or not. I would ask him a few questions. Like, how long has he owned the car. Did he have the engine rebuilt by a shop or did he do it? How many owners have had the car. Look at the engine it's self. It should be fairly clean and not any oil leak if it's only 65,000 ml. since it was rebuilt. If he will allow you to take it to a mechanic, have the compression tested on the cylinders. That will tell you a lot about the condition of the engine.

  5. If he has no proof then do not buy the car. The pre 1999 3.8L's had major head gasket problems. If you can afford it, get a 1999 or newer model, they have more power and are much more reliable. Gas milage isn't going to be much better than a V8. Expect 17-19 around town, 25-26 on the highway.
