1995 ford escort with 5 speed mazda transmission?

after rebuilding my transmission and trying to shift it throwgh the gears (not mounted to the engine but on a self-made stand) i am wondering if the shift change rod on the transmission is supposed to turn or just go in and out. i am thinking that it should do both. any help with this guys?
