1996 Chevy S10 pickup has mysterious plastic cover on dash.?

Question

Vehicle: 1996 Chevy S10 LS Pickup, 4.3L Vortec V6, MT, A/C.

Just to the left of the middle dash vents, there is a small, squarish plastic cover where an accessory might be if I owned a higher-end model or automatic transmission.

Does anyone know what that accessory might be? I thought maybe a clock, but couldn't find one. Something for the automatic trans models maybe? Thanks in advance.
