Question:

1996 Ford Ranger problems getting gas in tank?

Ever since I've had my 1996 Ford Ranger I've had issues getting gas to go in "normally". Usually the gas attendant (I live in Oregon, we don't pump our gas) has to sit and hold the nozzle or it will click off like its full. This can happen a couple times to happening every 2 seconds, it depends on the day.

I've had many theorists tell me what is wrong, but they all seem to be different. Does anyone have a concrete reason why this happens? Is it a manufacturer defect? It's more of an annoyance than a serious mechanical issue, but I would love to get it fixed at a fair price.

  1. 1..call your local ford dealer..info is free and I'm sure they've had problem before...2 Ive seen the problem before...solution was a new filler hose....3 fuel system is closed...there are 2 sometimes 3 hoses running to engine...usually a vent system from gas tank goes to a fume[vapor] collector..it may be clogged...gd luk

  2. either the tank is not venting properly so the gas backs up in the filler neck, or the fill hose has a kink in it. on most ford products the system is a hose within a hose. the inner hose is the fill hose and the outer hose is the vent hose.

  3. Wow, Oregon has gas attendants?

Could be a filler neck that has too small an opening, or bad rollover valve, or plugged vent. It's impossible to give a "concrete" answer without someone looking at it.

  4. yeah that does not sound good. my old camry that i used to drive was having simular problems but if i pushed the nozzle up to the top it would be fine but then i reallized their was big puddles of gas under my car and some how not all the gas got into the tank. waist of money.

  5. Generally this is due to a blockage in the vent hose on the filler neck. The vent hose is the smaller hose that goes from the fuel tank to the upper portion of the filler neck, it allows the air to move out of the tank as the gas goes in. The hose can get kinked or blocked and make it difficult to refuel. It should be easy to check, just crawl under by the filler, it's easy access between the bed side and frame. There are no common problems or TSBs for this problem on these vehicles. Hope this helps.
