Question:

1996 Ford Windstar that keeps stalling?

A few months ago, I took my van in because the engine was racing, as if I was standing on the gas pedal. After hundreds of dollars worth of worthless repairs, this place finally replaced the IAC (motor?). That's what it said on the receipt. Anyway, the racing stopped, but the van started stalling every so often, which it had never done before. They looked at it, and couldn't find the problem. Over time, the stalling got worse, and now I can get about half way to work, and then I have to ride the brake and the gas at every red light to keep it running, and often it stalls pulling into a parking spot. Please...any ideas??? I don't ever want to go back to that place, and I need this van to hold out until I can save up enough for another car.

After about two hours of rest, my van is fine for a little while. The more I have to stop, the quicker the stalling starts (I guess about ten minutes.) When cool, it starts very easily, but starts horribly after stalling.

  1. This is common on the Windstar which was never super-reliable to begin with.  Check on www.identifix.com to see what other mechanics are doing about the racing and the stalling.

  2. Check the fuel relay they will feel real hot to the touch. Black box under hood with the fuses pull the cover should be little black 1inch square cube looking thing. should be a couple in there put your hand on them see if one feels hot check right after the trucks been running.

What I did was when I got home I shut the truck off and immediately tried to restart the truck didn't start. I did this pulled the hot one put it in the freezer for a bit then reinstalled it guess what yeah it started right up That was a 96 ranger 4.0.

I've had similar problems with the IAC valve doing stuff like you mentioned You can clean those with throttle body cleaner. Instead of spending all that money replacing them.
