Question:

1997 Accord- Oil pouring out

Yesterday evening my oil light came on five blocks from home. When I pulled up to my house I noticed that I was trailing oil and a pool began to form on the ground under the timing side of the pan. I checked my dip and it was bone-dry. I added half a bottle of STP stop leak and it poured out onto the ground. Looking from above, the oil seems to be coming from under the (?timing belt?) cover behind the pulleys; but that may just be sprayed. It did spray- I can see oil in the tire well and even on the tire. I use Royal Purple full synthetic always and just checked the oil level on the 1st.(it was good.)

Please if you don't know anything about great cars, don,t respond that I should "buy American". It Is. Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated. I'm afraid to drive it and Can't miss any more WORK!

  1. have you had a oil change latly? sounds like the oil plug came out or ihate to say it. a***e in your oil pan. what ever you do . do not drive it. you will burn up the motor.is your oil cap on tight. its located behind the radiator, where you add oil. check it. what ever you do. im telling you dont drive it. good luck, try and find a different way to work, untill you can have someone work on it.

  2. You have a hole somewhere letting oil out, probably in the pan.  You may have hit some debris on the road.

You can't drive it of course, without damage to the engine, so you have little choice but to call a tow truck and have it towed to your mechanic for evaluation and repair.

Added:  as far as work goes, you'll have to get a ride, perhaps from a co-worker, or rent a car while yours is being fixed.

  3. Make sure the oil filter is tight and secure, sounds dumb but you never know. Also take a look at the head gasket, the oil pan gasket, and cam seals. If you added a bottle of stop leak and it ran straight to the ground you obviously have a decent size hole. But DONT DRIVE IT!
