1997 Hyundai Tiburon

I live in Missouri. I bought it and thought it was a pretty good deal. Now, two days later after I get it completely legal, the transmission gives out on me or the clutch. However, I've spoke to mechanics who've said it'll cost me a pretty penny. I want to get rid of it and get money out of it still, -- what would I have to do or go to? Like a good junk yard -- GIVE ME LISTINGS.

  1. You spoken to mechanics and you don't know if its the transmission or the clutch??

You really need to take it to a real mechanic and find out the problem.  If you got a pretty good deal, then you should have some money to spend to fix the clutch (if it is the problem).

Take it to a mechanic, if it is the clutch, have the mechanic check over the engine and everything else.  If everything else is fine, buy a clutch (maybe $200 at most for that car) and pay for a mechanic to replace it.  If the car is fine besides the clutch, you will have a good running car for awhile.

  2. Look in your yellow pages under 'junk dealers' or 'automotive recyclers'.

Generally, junkyards pay you based on tonnage of the vehicle.  I think you'd be lucky if you got $175.00 for it, especially with a bad trans.

You might be better off parting it out on Ebay or even fixing it.  Maybe turning it into the Kidney Foundation as a tax write-off (if they do that in MO - I'm in NY).

For replacement of the clutch (no flywheel) it'll cost you about $700.00, parts and labor.  You might be better off checking into a used trans.  They run about $750.00, 4.5 hours to install.
