  1. check the cylinders or the gear box because the gears maybe jumping

  2. Check the compression on each cyl.

If compression is 150 psi. on each cyl. The motor is good!

2nd. Check the carbs and make sure it is getting full fuel / throttle.

When running in reverse the engine is not loaded as it is when it is in forward gear.

The propeller pitch is like a gear and will load the engine when it is in forward.

Due to the propellers forward thrust, the engine becomes loaded and is now in a working mode.

When the engine is in reverse, the propeller and engine is not as loaded and will just vent or free wheel and seem to be running good.

Do check the compression and fuel, if all  is good there look to the engines electrical firing system.

    ood Luck,
