1998 BMW 740 IL forums

Question

I have a 1998 BMW 740 IL and the low beams will no longer work however the high beams do function. I have checked the fuses and they are all functioning. I was wondering if anyone may have an answer.

Have you replaced your low beam lamps?  There should be separate low and high beam lamps.  The low beam bulb should be an H7 12V/55W Halogen bulb, unless you have a re-modeled front end.  If your front end was re-modeled, then you need to use D2S 35W Xenon HID bulbs.

If you did replace the bulbs, then the next thing to check is if power is being received at the low beam location.  To check that, you need a test lamp (available at any auto parts store).  Clip on end to the negative / ground location, and the other to the positive / incoming power location and see if the lamp lights.  If it does not light, then there may be a problem with the wiring or a relay somewhere.
