Question:

1998 Chevy Lumina Power Window Driver Side Wont Go Up or Down?

A few months ago the drivers side window started going up and down slow. Then it stopped going up and down completely, until we figured out we could take off the cap and use a pen or key to push the button a certain way to get it to go up and down, at full speed no less.

That stopped working.

All the other door windows go down no problem when using the master panel on the drivers side, or each respected doors button on the door; its just the drivers side window does not work.

Any solutions to this and can I do the work myself?

Is it wiring, the motor? I know its not a fuse because we tested the fuses.

Thank you for any help!

  1. ehh it could either be the wiring or a regulator. Only way to be sure is to check the wire going to the switch with a volt meter. If its not enough voltage, check and replace the wiring. If the wiring is fine, then you will have to look into replacing the switch itself. Replacing the switch isn't going to cost you much so I would do that first before looking into the regulator. However if the wiring is fine and the switch is new, replacing the regulator would be your last option.

  2. This could be wiring due to the fact that you had some power but not a whole lot so it may have had a weak contact...perhaps the wire fittings came loose...it is also possible the motor is just shot as the drivers side is the side that does get the most use...the other problem could be metal linkage that harness to the window that the motor actually powers to move it could be bent or need lubrication...this is just a search and fail or fix situation...the motor will possibly be the most expensive to fix and the linkage may be the most difficult to fix...all you can hope for is the best with trial and error...good luck

  3. it is probably the motor to put the window up and down if not it might be the switch
