Recently both front brakes were replaced (rotars and brake pads) on my 1998 buick century custom but about 1-2 weeks later the squeaking started again. When the mechanic took the wheel off one of the studs on the harmonic balancer was about a 1/4 inch shorter then the others but the nut stayed on the stud fine. The mechanic said it was the harmonic balancer but I think the car was like that before we got it, there is also excessive brake dust on the side it squeaks on over the passenger side. The brakes were not changed by a shop but by a professional that works for Ford that has been a mechanic for along time should i get another opinion? Some days the brakes do not squeak at all but other days its very loud it seems to be more often when stopping from higher speeds and usually dosent do it when coming to a rolling stop.

  1. The harmonic balancer is part of the engine, not the brakes. Take it to a shop.

  2. The harmonic balancer has nothing to do with the brakes. But refering to your problem, are you a left footed braker? That would cause your brakes to overheat & squeek. If not you may suspect your brake caliper is not releasing all the way,or you have a collapsed brake hose on the passenger side. You also may want to swirl cut the rotors, that is to put a nondirectional finish on the surfaces of the rotor with lite sandpaper, and also to the pad surface, kind of ruffing them up.Also use some brake quiet on the back side of the pads.
