1998 ford probe transmission problems

trans shifts erratically,slams in and out of gears,runs fine sometimes.does not seem to know what gear to be in depending on driving situation.seems electrical.

While I agree with Scottythecomic, I have to ask this question: Do you mean 1989 Probe? 1996 was the last year for the Probe..

Has a CD4E Transaxle in this vehicle and sounds like a VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) You are not experincing slipping nor gears not engageing just erratic and hard engagement. Have codes retreived @ Autozone for free and may have the code in memory for VSS.

dont listen to master blaster buy a foriegn car like a nissan then you wont have these problems

It's most likely a sensor - about a $110 fix. Any reputable transmission shop will diagnose your car for free.

I had the same problem on my 1996 Ford Contour.
