Question:

1999 Sportster: Slice or remove?

My handgrips are worn to nub and I want to replace them. However, I've run into two methods. One, remove the bar controls, ease off the grips and then replace them: possible s******g up the throttle cables and crushing the break light switch. Two, slice them off and then slide the new ones one, get on it and go? The second method sounds good, but am I missing something here? The grips came with a single set of instructions advising me to consult the service manual, which I don't have. Suggestions? Oh, and everyone that hates HD or Sportsters, give it up, I don't care.

  1. Wrap you old tube sock over  the grip then safety wire it down.  Works like a champ.

I ride my 83 Sporty to work almost everyday.

    Now get on with it.

  2. You could use air pressure to get them off.

Nobody said anything about your precious Sportster, paranoid much?

  3. Just cut them off. I use hairspray to get the new ones on and when the hairspray dries it has a super glue like grip.

  4. Cut 'em. and use some good grip adhesive, like Death Grip, on the new ones.

  5. Just cut it off and just hair sprayer to help is slide back onto the grib.

  6. we've always cut off the factory grips.  it is the easiest and simple.  just take care on the throtle side and dont cut any deeper then you have to..
