I purcahsed a new Viking d1 in 1999 and used it for 3 years, mostly for embroidery. NOw I am trying to get it to embroidery again and here is my question. I used to be able to download designs from the internet ONTO FLOPPY DISKS, but now computers use only dvd's and cd's, so how does this work ?

  1. You will need to purchase a USB (aka thumb drive) from your viking dealer.  You will also need to have a computer to download the designs to your USB.

  2. They do sell external floppy drives.  Mine was about $35 from one of the big box stores, and operates via a usb port.  Works fine to get the designs on a floppy for my D-1 of the same era.

  3. If you have the 31/2 floppy drive you need floppy disk and a software program that will change design into shv.  Embird works great and not as expensive.  Download your design in any format except art,  then you need to unzip it, change it to shv and load it onto the floppy.  It should work just fine after this on your designer 1. bee

  4. Hi,

I also bought a Viking Designer 1 in 1999. I have upgraded this machine to a USB D1, but this is not necessary to do.

There are extern floppy disk drives with USB-port to purchase. I just bought a floppy disk reader in order to read old saved floppy disks , but I also have the pro 3 D design program. I hope this will help you.

    Kind regards,

  5. I have a floppy disc designer1. In fact I just bought my second one! I love them, but I am sorry to tell you that you will have to have floppy disc drive on your computer. I don't think they sell external floppy drives, but they can be added to your computer. I checked into replacing my computer and I was told a floppy drive can be added as an option (just like getting add-ons to a new car), but they are on their way out. So if you need one I would check into it or maybe buy an old used computer to use just for sewing, that is what I plan to do with this one when I get a new one. Good Luck! I hope this helps you.

  6. I just download my designs right onto my computer. Once on your computer in a file you can copy it on to a cd.
