1999 ford taurus transmission problem?

When I start driving in the mornig my automatic transmission wont shift out of first gear and my speedometer dosn't work for about 2 miles then everything starts working again like nothing was ever wrong. Can I get some suggestions before I spend a grip on a mechanic.

  1. there is a chance you could have a loose elec connector on the transaxle but evan if that is the case that is a crappy modle of tranny ford has a very bad time with front wheel drive trans next to dodge they are a close #2 for worst transmissions. another sugestion might be to try and flush the fluid and if it starts working better (longshot) ad an aux trans cooler it will extend the life a little on a failing trans. also get it code scaned first if possible a trans code may pop up  


  2. Check your tranny fluid level,(while running in park)-it may just be low.                                                                                                      cross your fingers and say a prayer.

  3. if your trans does not shift out of 1st gear and speedometer is not working you might have a couple of problems. You can start off cheap by replacing your vehicle speed or your output shaft speed sensor. Check witch sensor your trans has but you might want to have your car scan by a professional for any codes.
