1ST ANSWER WINS!!!Anyone have ideas for youth group going to nursing home to volunteer? What can we do there?

our group is going to a nursing home, and we need ideas of stuff to do. we already have: of course, talking to them, asking questions about their life and family(they love that) bringing pets, and having the youth band play music for them. we arent allowed to help in the kitchen though. thanks 4 your time! =] God bless.

Bring a pet, a dog, preferably. A little fluffy dog.  Maybe one that can do tricks!  Pets bring so much joy to the elderly and all the attention is on them.  Dogs and people too love the attention!  It could develop into a regular thing.  Then the elderly would look forward to the visit and the dog will know them all too. It would be a good thing for everyone.

Also, get some paper and crayons together and bring them with you.   Have them draw pictures of themselves, however they perceive themselves to be.  Have them color these pictures, cut them out and paste them on cardboard.  Cut them out again and make a little stand so they can stand up on the table.  Have them take their charactictures and use them in different dramatizations of their lives.  This can be really interesting and fun for all of you!  Have fun!

Take each of them a stuffed animal.......they love to cuddle with them.

Why dont you pamper them. Give them hand and foot massages and paint their fingernails. Thats what I do with my spare time at the nursing home I work at and they LOVE it.

Take along some games to play with them like dominos, checkers, or playing cards. That would be fun to do.

This would take more prep and you would need to get the approval of the staff, but you could have a dance. As in bring some favorite hits (30s, 40s, etc.) and get out on the dance floor. You could also read to them. Or if this is long term your group could teach a few classes (computer skills, art, etc)

Put on a simple show of some sort.  May be a puppet show.
