It means your Dr was able to stick his or her fingertip in your cervix, but that's all no more than that. And you'll probably be giving birth within a month or so! Congratulations!

during labor, your cervix has to thin out and open up. the dilating part is your cervix opening up, and effacement is how thinned out your cervix is. lots of women dilate and efface before labor.
