to help you understand it:

one litre is 1000 mL. so 1mg/L is one part per thousand. 0.001mg/L is one part per million.

basically you compare relative amounts, i.e. grams and litres, but you can use prefixes on your units to ensure you don't have stupidly long decimals:

e.g. 1ppm = 0.000001g/L is more simply written (as above) as 1ug/L or 0.001 mg/L
