1st birthday ideas?

My son's 1st birthday is coming up and I'm trying to come up with a theme. I don't want anything too big or extravagant, since he is so young & he will only remember it in pictures. I would prefer something away from the normal pooh bear, baby Einstein, etc. Also where can I find these for a low price?

  1. anything colorful...I dont really like character themed birthdays.

"under the sea" would be fun.

You could get really crafty to save money. Just draw and cut out fish and seaweed from construction paper and streamers. Blue gel "water" cupcakes. Have some blue jello in a big glass container of some sort and put some Swedish fish in it. A great cake with gummy sharks and mermaids(maybe)

A bug theme would also be cool.

The same thing with colorful bugs made from construction paper. Maybe everyone could have their own set of antennas to wear. Creepy crawly cake with gummy worms. An ant farm for decoration. Make sure the tablecloth has lots of ants drawn on it.

Hope I gave some OK ideas. Just build on from here.

  2. Most babies that age like interactive toys, like the ones with multi colored lights, and music.

  3. I read on babycenter.com (which is in fact one of the best websites that I know of) that simple is key!  You already said that but at least you are right in that department!  You don't have to go with an actual theme.  A one year old doesn't know the difference from Pooh or Poo! hehehe... Bright colors are great for any one year olds birthday along with lots of balloons which you can get cheap at a dollar store or any grocery store.  If you purchase a cake from Publix, they will give your first born a specialized personal cake just for himself (or herself).  It's perfect for all of the messy cake pictures that your heart desires!  My daughter just had her first and it was a blast!  We kept it simple so it wasn't too overwhelming... I had lots of chicken wings and finger foods and even the adults had a blast!  It's important to keep everyone in a good mood since babies feed off of emotions.  We had a baby pool set up for the babies to spash around in and lots of bubbles.  They were the hit of the party!  I hope your baby has a blast.  I have a feeling it's going to be awesome! GOOD LUCK!
