Question:

1st contact?

According to the club rules I coached by, my players were pretty much able to do anything except catch the ball on the first contact receive-- meaning double hits, lifts, whatever. In our reffing seminar, we were told it was perfectly legal.

(USAVB) Now I'm coaching according to the NFHS regulations, and I want to know if that still applies. Can you double hit on the first contact?

  1. The rule is the same for NFSHSA as it is in USAV club.  It may not be called the same unfortunately.  I have seen some "old time" referees that refuse to change with the game of volleyball.  They have called the double hit on the first contact.  The good news is that most referees will call the rule correctly.

A lift is still illegal, but a double contact is still allowed if it is still just one attempt to play the ball.  (If you pop the ball up and then you take another swing at it, it is still an illegal double hit on the first ball.)

If I have confused you more than before my answer, please feel free to email me.
