I read in the paper something about group that went around to schools and shelters to read to children. I decided to volunteer. Once everything was set (background check, fingerprints, etc), they gave me the place I'm going to. It's a school about 20 minutes away from my house it a well, needy town. The schools can't afford to hire extra people to come and help out the teachers, so this program is a lifesaver to them.
Once a week what happens is the teacher does her 30 minute math lesson, then gives the kids 30 minutes worth of quiet math work. Then she does 30 minute spelling lesson, and gives them 30 minutes worh of quiet spelling work. Then she gives the kids 30 minute social studies lesson, and 30 minutes worth of quiet work. Another teacher has the same schedule (just one is 30 minutes ahead of the other). During those 30 minutes of quiet work, I''m sitting in the back of the room with 1 student at a time (there learning to read homework book) while the teacher helps the students with the "queit work" they are doing. I have to run back and forth between both classes during "quiet work" time.
Anyway, then at the end of that, both classes have 45 minutes of reading groups. Each day is a different group. That means the other children are left doing SSR. I plan on having a outloud reading. Any suggestions on books? It's a 1st grade class!
