My 6 year old daughter is in first grade. Her class had raised butterflies from when they were still catapillars in the fall. But when they get back from spring break, they will be raising snails. Each student in the class will either get their own or share one with a friend. If they want to at the end of the unit when the snails are older they can take theirs home. Well, my daughter wants to take hers home. Does anyone know if this is a good idea? Can you just give me some background information as to what I should know regarding snails and if this is a good idea. Keep in mind that we also have a 2 year old daughter and I'm pregnant with our third child.

Thank you so much!!

  1. its a snail.  it will be okay.  as long as your 2 year old does it eat it your good.  its not going to crawl in your ear and get your unborn child either.  snails are fun and they don't bite or anything.  i've played with wild ones all my life!   just wash your hands after handling it.  just like every other pet.

  2. I'm not to sure but I found a site that seems to have a lot of info, hope this helps ...

  3. the snail will be fine a long as your 2 yr. old does not eat it. Umm... go to google and look up caring for snails and find out what they eat and stuff like that.

    GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!

  4. Snails are kind of easy to take care of, but sometimes the cage tends to smell a little bad. You have to put some water in the cage and a little bit of food, but it's just like having fish. The smell is sometimes bad.. just clean the cage when you get the chance. The only reason I would do it was if I had a child and she reeeealllyyyy wanted it. Good luck.

  5. Just Google: Caring for snails....Im sure its not much

  6. My daughter brought home beatles last year and it was terrible...they all died or got eaten by the cat...but a snail is slow and easy to contain....I say give it a shot and try to show her about being "mommy" to the snail...good luck w/the baby

  7. I think the idea is that she is learning to take care of a pet herself.  I'm sure if she brings it home they will also send home instructions.  I really don't think it is as big a deal as you may think, and the 2 yr old and being pregnant is not going to be a factor.  Snails don't cause diseases, especially ones brought from school.

  8. I don't think it's a good idea because if your 2 year old touched it and put it's fingers in his mouth he could start crying. Also you may not get home on time everyday and it may p**p in your house, What school does she go to and I will let u know:)!!

  9. This more than likely not a good idea. If your going to be having a newborn baby around the house you're probably going to be stressed out consiering that you have a 2 year old also. (no offense) More than likely  since you'll have so much on your hands already, your daughter probably will become uninterested in the snail after about a week or two. it's a common scheme but when shes aleep just take the snail outside and let it go. when she sees the empty cage just tell her that it died and youll go get her a pet fish or something. Hope this helps!!

  10. My kids raised guppies in first grade and at the end of the year got to bring theirs home. (If it was still alive) I think it is a good idea and my kids enjoyed the responsibility of their first pet.

  11. Snails are really durable, they eat just about any vegetation, and as far as cleaning and maintanence just make sure its soil is moist but not to the point that the snail won't have stable ground and just change containers every couple days and dump the contents of the old one.  They are low maintanence and cheap.  It's a great idea for a pet for a young child.  Good Luck.   Oh yeah, don't let your daugter salt it....duh!lol.

  12. yes

  13. they are only snails soooooooo they wont raelly do anything

  14. This all depends on how responsible your child is, and how willing you are to teach her about caring for a pet. Of course, if the snail does come home, you will want to have a place for the snail that is up and away from the ground where the 2 year old can reach it. We all know what 2 year olds like to do with small things ; )

I think that the biggest issue with this is that just like everything else - snails die. If your child has trouble letting go of things they are attached to, you should definately take that into consideration.
