My cousin's daughter is in the first grade and her teacher has asked everyone to build a robot out of a shoe box. My cousin is pretty much stuck on how to start and help her daughter. I'm not a creative type so I wouldn't know how to help. Any links or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

  1. u gotta have the kid do it... u cant have the parent help with everything or the kids gonna have no imagination when theyre older

  2. Use 2 empty paper towel rolls for the legs howeve cut about 1-2 inches off so the legs aren't that long. Use 2 empty toilet paper rolls for the arms. To put the legs on cut 2 holes in the bottom and insert the paper towel rolls into the holes. Make 4 small slits and fold a little of the paper towel rolls down inside of the box now either tape or glue the folded ends to the box. Now repeat the same process on each side of the box for the arms. Use 1 of the pieces that was cut off the paper towel roll as the neck which will be attached the same way as the legs and arms just at the center of the top of the other end of the box. Get a large styrofoam ball or square for the head. Trace the end of the towel paper roll in the spot where you want to attach the head. Have an adult trace the circle outline with a sharp knife not cutting into deep. Go around the circle with some glue and incert the neck to the robot into the hole and let the glue dry. You cousin can get smaller balls for the hands and repeat the same process that was used to attach the head. For the feet she can either use 2 styrofoam  cups upside down and cutting the bottoms out and inserting legs and cutting slits and gluing or taping it down. However try and find 2 flat pieces of styrofoam for the feet. Eyes can be bought from a craft store. Push pins can be pushed in and glued so the child can't pull them back out. Buttons or whatever can be used to decorate the robot. Once the inside of the shoe box is no longer needed as far as working to add the legs and arms glue or tape the cover on to hide how the legs and arms have been attached. After the box has been closed with the glue or tape the child can decorate as her imaginate tells her. She can make a dress out of construction paper, just trace 1 copy but cut 2 for the front and back and tape to the body of the box. This is a good way to hide any tape that may be used. Have it hang a little longer than the box to hide the legs being connected and she can have sleeves as well to hide the arms being attached.

I don't have any children but I help my nephew and younger cousins with little school projects all the time.

I hope this gives you or your cousin a little help

  3. Here's a website ...

    http://parenting.families.com

They do have a pic. of a robot made out of a shoe box. you can add anything to be creative. Have your cousins daughter make a girl robot and put glitter and pretty stuff on it. I think her daughter will have fun decorating it.

Parents are encouraged to help their children with projects.

  4. get some googly eyes and tin foil and glue and pipe cleaners and scissors and give them to the kid. Let the first grader do the rest, but if she needs help with something like covering the box in tin foil, be able to help her.

  5. take the shoe box...cut circles for arms on each side, and two circles for legs on the bottom, take the cardboard inside of paper towel rolls, wrap them in aluminum foil (as well as the shoe box) and then use them for the arms and legs. use a smaller box for the head (wrap in aluminum foil as well) and a toilet paper cardboard rapped in the foil for the neck. then buy supplies to let her decorate the face..maybe some felt and plastic eyes (arts and crafts section at your local department store, like walmart will have these, or the local craft store like michaels, joanns, or hobby lobby.)

for the rolls to stay in place you can do a couple of things.

one you can cut the circles just right, so that the rolls just fit inside them, and then surround them with hot glue, this will require a hot glue gun..and it is surprisingly easy to use. or you can push the rolls through the holes, and then use something to secure them from the other side, like pins (not sharp ones) to stick all the way through the roll sideways behind the box and in front of the box, this will keep them from falling out as well.

  6. Take a shoe box, and maybe a smaller size for the head. I would use pipe cleaner to attach it.  Maybe use pipe cleaners and attach some soda cans as arms, legs, hands, feet. Use some large buttong as the eyes or maybe some bottle caps. Let the child do as much as possible and ask them what they think they should use. Children can be very resourceful with ideas.
