Question:

1st grader going into 2nd behind in Reading?

My son is currently in first grade and reading below level. He is reading at DRA level 10 and needs to be at DRA level 16-18 before Second Grade begins. Is it possible to catch him up with reading books daily (both him reading aloud, and me reading him books) and using workbooks. Any suggestions would be great!

  1. Sure i think it's possible. Go to the libabry and get level 1 books, if he reads them well go to level 2. Then to level 3. The reading level is usually in the top right hand corner.

get a mixture of 1-2-3 books so they are not all hard for him. Any reading is better then no reading.

I have a great site that my daughter used http://www.starfall.com/

it makes reading fun and entertaining.

good luck and just keep reading.

  2. my son had the same problem and very (did I say very) poor writing skills, spelling is horrible, I had him tested every year (held him back in kindergarten) to get caught up, he is now in second grade and he tested again and has borderline dyslexia and also has auditory processing issues and is in the RSP program.  I did use hooked on phonics with him in kindergarten for 2 years ( you can borrow it from the library at NO charge) and I also do a thing where we read the same book all week long, because his confidence goes way up the faster he gets at reading the book,  make sure you read with him every day at least 15 minuts and have him practice with flash cards that will help

  3. my daughter was struggle and i used www.starfall.com. you can order some of the materials so he can follow along with the website

    good luck

  4. You should ask Nancy Stein here:

She is an expert with 17 years' experience and works at one of the leading schools for kids with special needs in the country, so free advice from her is pretty cool. I found that the other day and she gave me some really awesome advice about my niece.

  5. It is possible but I would look into this further. Has he been evaluated for a learning disability? He could have dyslexia or another issue causing him to struggle with reading.

  6. My son was struggling but we make him read 10 minutes to us and 10 minutes silently daily.

  7. yes its possible dont worry your son is going to be able to read probaly better than all the other kids just stay positive
