1st time horse better?

Question

I would like to bet on 2 horses how ever I don't know how to place the bet... I have 2 horses and lets say $40.00 dollars to do so and would like to put $10.00 on each to win and $10.00 to place or come in second..I'm not sure if that is an exacta or a box bet. I would like my 2 horses to win or place either way they come out..I hope who ever answers me understands my question. ex: If i choose the 1 and 2 horse i want to place a bet where if the 1 horse wins and the 2 horse comes in second or if the 2 horse wins the 1 horse comes in seconds and i win either way..Thanks for anyone's help.

So you want to place an exacta bet... you're betting on the top 2 finishers.  Since you want it each way, it's an exacta box.  Lets say your 2 horses are the 3 and the 5.  If you have an exacta box, you win if the 3 is 1st and the 5 is 2nd OR if the 5 is 1st and the 3 is 2nd.

What you say at the window is that I want a $20 exacta box of the 3 and 5.  That means you're putting $20 on the horses to finish 3, 5 and $20 on the horses to finish 5, 3.  = $40

You could also put win and place bets on both of the horses.

You could put a $10 win place bet on the 3 and a $10 win place bet on the 5.  That means $10 for the 3 to win, $10 for the 3 to place, $10 for the 5 to win, $10 for the 5 to place.  =$40

just do exacta box on the two horses you like 10 each way cost 20 and 10 to win on both cost you 20 and 10 to place on both cost you 20. total bet=60
