I am trying to figure out how and what to feed my 5 month old daughter. I started her on rice cereal and she is currently eating that once a day. Does anyone know of any good books that gives recommendations as to what foods to feed baby and what order to feed them in? Everyone I talk to says something different! I want to make my own baby food but I don't even know what foods to make! Please help me!

  1. My son started eating rice cereal the day he turned 4 months b/c he was not satisfied by breast milk alone. Then when he turned 6 months I introduced stage one veggies. THe key is slow and steady. Let him try a new food, wait about 4-5 days to make sure she doesn't have a reaction then you may proceed to try another. Just don't rush, she'll pick up on it. My little man was always a great eater. The first "real solid" food I ever gave him was those gerber rice puffs but you have a while until then. Good luck, follow your daughter's cues, you'll do great! Oh and you can find great books on amazon.com for making your own baby foods and what not. That was where I got mine.

  2. I liked the "Baby Wise II" book (the second one, not the first one, by the Ezzos and Bucknams), they had a good 'feeding regimen' that I used and it seemed to work. pretty well about introducing fruits and veggies, etc...

Although, my pediatrician said, and he's been in practice for 25 years and is on several boards of 'this and that' yada yada yada, said ALL they REALLY need the first year is formula or breast milk, everything else is just gravy to get them used to textures. :)

  3. Your pediatrician should be giving you recommendations on what to feed your baby and when.  It is recommended that babies not start solids until they are 6 months old.  You start with the different baby cereals and then add in veggies and then fruits.  My pediatrician suggested I start with orange/yellow veggies giving 1 at a time and after about 3-4 times of serving 1 veggie, try another one.  After orange/yellow veggies, move on to green veggies.  Then you move on to fruits.

  4. First of all stop the Rice Cereal. It is found to be causing problems with allergies and digestive system at this age.You should be feeding Formula or breast milk at this age.Always discuss feeding with your pediatrician before starting solids.

  5. I would go to your local library and see what you can find there.  I own a book called "Mommy Made" that gives details of how to make baby food from infant to toddler.  It is organized by food type and labels when each food should be introduced.

  6. Every one will tell you different things you can just do what you think is best. I started my son off on rice cereal as well, then i pureed some apples and gave him pureed / mashed potatoes and pretty much gave him what ever i could puree for him. he loved the mixed veggies and now he will eat what ever veggies you put on his plate. He is the best eater.

if unsure try a google search or a Mum's / parenting website

  7. they say when you start giving them baby food ( usually 6 months), you should start them out with veggies first and then fruit so they can get used to eating veggies. otherwise they will like the fruit and not want to eat veggies. but you can feed them pretty much anything that they can swallow and digest. pureed fruits and veggies, mashed potatoes, yogurt, once they get teeth you can feed them whatever you're eating.. just in small pieces.
