I want to set up my small tanks (used to be betta tanks) as a fry tank for my platy that is about ready to have babies. Would two one gallon tanks be large enough? Would I be able to use a heater rated for a 2-5gallon tank in this one gallon tank? It does have a filter but does anyone know if those little filter blocks you stick to the wall of the tanks work? The filter in the tank is only underground and I don't really trust that it is working.

  1. no, one gallon tanks will not be sufficiant. there will be too many fry. no, if it's rated 2-5 gallons, then anything more will not be heated sufficiantly, and anything less could be very hazerdous to your fish. there is no cenventional heater that i know of that can heat such a small tank. i'm not sure what you mean by a 'little filter block'. you will need a sponge filter run off an aerator.

    good luck :)

  2. sorry but underground filters wont do the job, they are pretty crappy. And the heater should not be used in 1gal.

you really should get a new tank (atleast 5gal) and a good filter(with flow controll) and a normal heater (or you can use the one you have).

If money is the problem, check on craigslist if not, i really reccomend you make an investment so that the platy fry have a better chance of survival. Also, you should cycle the tank before you put the platy fry in there. i love raising baby fish, they are so cute.

    good luck with your fry.
