Is learning to strum only select strings (like not the sixth for the C major chord) with the pick actually readily possible, or is muting the only way?

With muting, is it good practice to use your thumb? [I heard that having your thumb stick out from the neck is terrible posture?]

 1. It's definitely possible. Like when I play the D chord I only play D, G, B, and E strings. It's a learned thing. Just keep practicing.

 2. Its easier just to mute it with your fingers on your left hand. Everyone has a different playing style. Jimi Hendrix used to use his thumb for chords all the time. You should have your thumb in the middle of the guitar neck.

 3. It's possible. Just train yourself to start on the A string and not the bass string. It because a natural reflex after a while. DONT USE YOUR THUMB. BAD. That's for lazy cheaters to mute with your thumb. :P
