  1. When I was four years old and two ladies from the Salvation Army came by with a Christmas hamper for us. I remember they gave me a doll's carriage that Christmas. My father was laid off work every year just before Christmas. Not that we had much any other time of the year. But that was the first time I remember feeling different.

  2. I come from a poor background so I always pretty much new what being poor meant. Both my parents grew up in a third world country. My Dad was pretty well off but he was still around poverty and my mom was poor herself. For a while my mom was homeless here in the United States while she already had me. I didn't move to a good neighborhood until I was in 4th grade and before then I lived in really bad neighborhoods.

  3. i discovered my family was poor at age 9, but my parents always had a roof ovr our head and food in our tummy. We had problems with my dad and drugs, my mom was the only one that worked for the longest time. we have never got back on our feet fully we still lower class. Im 16 now.

  4. That depends on what you mean by "poor". People belonging to the lower class in general, or people in specific living conditions?

I've known about the "poor" as long as I can remember. I didn't really know why they were poor. Early on, and even today, people (in general) tried/try to give the impression that people are poor because they were/are lazy, or don't work. But as I got older, became "conscious" and got into sociology, philosophy, etc. I learned that there was a lot more to the issue than that, on top of disabilities and other issues.

The main thing is the current, and previous, economic, social and political systems. Today's lower class was yesterday's lower class. In history, every time there was some type of economic or political change, the people in the low class stayed put while the middle and upper classed members of society moved up or exchanged places.

The class system is a "result" of exploitation. The upper class (those with power, not just money) exploits the middle and lower classes to get to, and stay, where it is. It uses its power and influence to get more work/effort out of the lower classes while giving back less than it takes. The middle and lower classes are also "cushions" for the upper class - we are always the ones who suffer from the decisions of the rich and powerful, rarely do they take responsibility for their own actions.

That's it in a nutshell. I might come back and add more later.
