i have an old 2-cycle gas trimmer that i just got to run again, but now there is a lot of white smoke coming from the exhaust pipe, how can i reduce the smoke? i already tried adding more gas to the oil-gas mix but it still makes the same amount of smoke as before

  1. Sounds like its spitting straight oil, which is causing the smoke.

or even make sure it DOES have oil. but a 2-cycle is always going to smoke. my boyfriend has a banshee which is 2 stroke.. always smoke and so did everything else that was 2 stroke :]

  2. are you using the correct ratio?

  3. do you have oil mixed with the gas

  4. If you haven't mixed oil with the gas you should. If you have you may have put too much oil in (too rich). Also, be sure to use premium unleaded gas

  5. You are on the right track. The correct mixture is very important.  Check the owners manual for the proper ratio.  Also, when the trimmer sits the gasoline evaporates but the oil doesn't and that results in too much oil.  Too much oil can foul the plug too, so if you get hard starting take the plug out and clean it off as best you can or replace it with a fresh one. I find my trimmer smokes less after I have been using it and it is up to running temperature.  Perhaps the piston expands and tightens up the seal between the crankcase and the combustion chamber.  I also wonder if different 2 stroke oils work better than others, and smoke less.  be sure you are using oil designed for air cooled engines, outboard motor oil, for example is designed to be used at a lower temp.  Lastly, if all else fails start over by removing the old gasoline, putting it in you car, and starting with fresh gasoline and new oil.    Hope that helps, we don't want to pollute the neighborhood!
