Question:

2 ft garden wall - do I need footings?

I want to put a 2 ft block wall with stone veneer around my patio. The patio is already 4" concrete. Can I just mortar the blocks to the edge of the patio, or do I have to dig/set new footings. (The wall is for decoration purposes and not going to be a retaining wall).

  1. send me the measurements of the patio and I will send you a detailed plan with all the suplies that youi will ned. Thiss willl be at he lowest prices on the market. I wil chage you noyhing for my services

  2. I would have thought if the supporting 4" patio is laid over a hard surface and well tamped (not soft ) it would not be a problem.

two foot of blocks is not that heavy spread along an edge.

  3. If the existing slab is sound (no cracks) you can mortar your blocks directly to the slab. The other stuff is absolute overkill for a short wall such as you describe.

Make sure the bond between all surfaces is sound (between mortar&block, mortar&slab, and stone veneer&mortar).  Clean the slab well, and make sure both slab and block are dampened slightly (no puddles) before buttering your blocks. Add a little acrylic fortifier (liquid at home supply store) to your mix.  This will not only strengthen your mortar, but also give good adhesion between all surfaces

    Good luck.

  4. You don't need footings per se - but you will need to dig down 3" to 4" add a sand and crush stone base and tamp really  well.  Pound a few re bar rods in to add some support and strength to your  wall.   Set you first course over a mortar bed and complete your wall.
